Solidarity Action: UNITE vs 7-Eleven (Carlton) Oct 9 2008

UNITE ACTION: Meet from 5pm – 6pm Thursday October 9 at 743 Swanston Street, Carlton.

The store is near the corner of Swanston and Grattan Streets (close to Melbourne Uni).

This week, as university students are back on campus, UNITE has decided to target the 7-Eleven store in Carlton closest to Melbourne University. We will be letting students know about the super-exploitation taking place at 7-Eleven stores.

This store is usually visited by hundreds of students who study at Melbourne Uni or who live around the area. We will use the action to highlight the illegal employment practices that 7-Eleven is engaged in. We will also ask students to consider shopping at a convenience store that does not rip-off their fellow students.

Plans are also in place to letterbox the many apartment blocks in the area where thousands of students live. We will be distributing our very popular leaflet titled 7-Eleven: High prices and low pay! Please come along to the action or if you can help letterbox an area contact Anthony Main on 0417368215.

1871: The Paris Commune

This coming week is the anniversary of the Paris Comune. Here we reproduce a short pamphlet to remind working people of our world history. It is being produced by some members of the Melbourne Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World, PO Box 145, Moreland VIC 3058.

Hard copies will be distributed at a commemoration organised by the @narchist Age Weekly and the www.seditioncharter.org crew outside the French Consuls Melbourne Office 150 Queen Street, Melbourne (cnr- Bourke & Queen Sts) 12.30pm Wednesday 28th March 2007. Roll up and collect your own copy!!

A brief history of the world's first socialist working class uprising.

The workers of Paris, joined by mutinous National Guardsmen, seized the city and set about re-organising society in their own interests based on workers' councils. They could not hold out, however, when more troops retook the city and the rich ordered the massacre of 30,000 workers in bloody revenge.

Solidarity needed in Melbourne TOMORROW!!

Union Solidarity has issued the following request "Urgent update: Management at Preston Motors has threatened to sue striking NUW (National Union of Workers) members. Union Solidarity will not put up with this sort of intimation of ordinary rank and file members. We urge all of our supporters to attend future community assemblies. Over 30 workers working in the spare parts/stores section of Preston Motors began a strike on Tuesday, 13 March, over the company’s continued refusal to negotiate a fair wage increase" There is a community assemlby on tomorrow, Thursday the 22nd of March from 8-11am at Preston Motors; 1551 Sydney Rd, Campbellfield, Melbourne.
