JUNK foods high in fat and sugar are being served in the cafes of Melbourne's major hospitals. Despite Australia's obesity alarm, a host of artery-clogging foods top the menu for visitors and patients, a Sunday Herald Sun survey has found. Health experts have criticised the fare, with some calling on hospitals to ban deep-fried and sugar-rich snacks.

The investigation found soft drinks, chocolate, chips and energy drinks dominated cafe menus at five Melbourne hospitals. At Royal Children's Hospital, deep-fried spring rolls and hot dogs wrapped in pastry were available. So were chocolate bars, potato chips and sweet biscuits. At a cafe shared by the Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's hospitals, pizzas, ice cream scoops, meat pies, sausage rolls and beef burgers were on sale. The Alfred hospital had a salad bar, but also numerous high-calorie, artery-choking foods for sale. All five hospitals sold energy drinks such as Red Bull and Mother, which scientists last year linked to an increase in heart disease.
