The October 18th issue of New Scientist featured a cover and special report on "how our economy is killing the earth." As Wobblies, we know that it isn't 'our economy' which is polluting the planet with the growth of crap. As Wobblies, we desire, "to live in harmony with the Earth" which means living in a sustainable way and not treating the planet like it was a commodity, to be bought and sold in the marketplace. Capitalism can't be sustained without growth. Can humans and the capitalist system continue to live in harmony? Don't we, the producers, need a new system of production where living in harmony with the Earth is the primary criteria, a system based on producing useful goods and services for human need and not just mindlessly producing commodities for sale to benefit the capitalist few? Isn't it OBVIOUS that the first step on the road towards living in a sustainable way is to shorten the work day and to stop using fossil fuels to provide power? Why isn't this being done? With enough Wobblies, it can be done. Are you a member of the IWW yet? |
