The Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) is a crowd-control and hailing device developed by American Technology Corporation. According to the manufacturer's specifications, the equipment weighs 45 pounds (20 kg) and can emit sound in a 30° beam (only at high frequency, 2.5 kHz) from a device 83 centimetres (33 in) in diameter. At maximum level, it can emit a warning tone that is 146 dBSPL (1,000 W/m2) at 1 metre, a level that is capable of permanently damaging hearing, and higher than the normal human threshold of pain (120–140 dB).

NOTE: In February 2009, the Japanese whaling fleet operating in Antarctic waters near Australia installed LRADs on their vessels. The devices were later used to deter activists of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The Japanese fleet later escalated the use of LRAD, deploying it against a Sea Shepherd helicopter carrying a camera crew.

In November 2009, the BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) brought public attention to Vancouver Police Department (VPD) purchase of a sonic weapon... The LRAD (long-range acoustical device) has a capability of emitting “powerful deterrent tones” that can permanently damage human hearing and induce visual disturbance. In case of Sonic Attack on your district, follow these rules:

Try to get as far away from the sonic source as possible

Use your wheels. It is what they are for.

Small babies may be placed inside the special cocoons and should be left, if possible, in shelters.

Do not attempt to use your own limbs.

If no wheels are available - metal - not organic - limbs should be employed whenever practical.

Remember: In the case of sonic attack survival means "Every man for himself"

Statistically more people survive if they think only of themselves

These are all sign of imminent sonic destruction
