How to use the IWW Website

Intro

Yes, you can add content to the website! We want you to! Read below for some tips on how to do it.

First off, you need editing access to the site. If you don't have access to the website, ask someone who does to give it to you (Meela, mjd) or request an account. Login to the website at the login page. You'll notice a "Navigation" menu on the left of the screen. If you want to submit a story, image, or write a blog post, then click "create content" in this menu.

Types of content you can create

There are several types of content you can add to the website. Here's what they mean:

Book page A book is a collaborative writing effort: users can collaborate writing the pages of the book, positioning the pages in the right order, and reviewing or modifying pages previously written. So when you have some information to share or when you read a page of the book and you didn't like it, or if you think a certain page could have been written better, you can do something about it.

Forum topic A forum is a threaded discussion, enabling users to communicate about a particular topic.

Image An image (with thumbnail). This is ideal for publishing photographs, stickers, posters, banners etc. Images will eventually turn up in the "Random Image" on the right hand side of the screen.

Page If you want to add a static page, like a contact page or an about page, use a page. This is really only for administrators. If you'd like a new page created, contact meela or mjd about it.

Personal blog entry Share your views with us and with the world!! A blog is a regularly updated journal or diary made up of individual posts shown in reversed chronological order. A blog is tightly coupled to the author so each user will have his 'own' blog.

Story This is where most of our content goes. Use this if you want to publish an article, a notice of a protest, etc. Stories are articles in their simplest form: they have a title, a teaser and a body, but can be extended by other modules. The teaser is part of the body too. Stories may be used as a personal blog or for news articles.

Submit a story

  • Click on "create content", then "story". This will take you to a page where you can add your story.
  • Select categories that you want your story to go in (see below for more info about categories)
  • Type your story in the text box
  • click preview to make sure everything looks ok.
  • when you are happy, click submit to update the live page.

Categories

  • This website has lots of categories to chose from - but don't let them intimidate you! They just allow your story to be displayed in the proper section automagically.
  • Here's a run-down of the categories and what they mean. IWW Oz News - If you select "Left Out" then your post will be filed into the "Left Out" box on the front page. - If you select "IWW Oz News" then your post will go into the IWW Oz News page. - You can select both, but remember "Left Out" is only for protests, pickets and strikes. Activities: - This will just sort your post under all the categories that you chose. Use Ctrl click to highlight more than one. Publications: - If your post comes from the AMB, or Direct Action, select that publication. Then it will come up when people look for AMB or Direct Action. Politics: - If your post is about a particular political perspective then select that here. Then when people search for that political perspective, your post will come up. Organisational Issues: - If your post is mainly about how we organise, structure, etc, then select one of these categories.

Permissions

  • "IWW Members" can post and approve stories, images, comments.
  • "IWW Friends" can post stories stories, images, comments, with approval.
  • "Commentors" have access to discussions on the website, and can make comments about articles. * Anonymous guests aren't allowed to comment - because of the huge amount of spam we were getting. * If you want to become a site admin, then let's rap.

Discussion is a first resort

Voting on articles

Yes, you can vote to promote or remove articles from display! Click here to access the "Submission queue". If an article is great, you can promote it by voting for it. If an article sucks, you can vote against it. If an article receives enough votes against it, it vanishes! So vote on your feet!

Comments and moderation

  • Anyone can comment - but anonymous comments need to be approved by a moderator. This is just because of our spam problem.
  • Comments can be deleted by a moderator (i.e. if its spam, or patently offensive)
  • Once you log on to the website, you can give a rating to comments. A comment with enough negative ratings will be hidden from view. This is a way for the community to decide what they find appropriate for the site, or not.
  • To moderate comments, just select the rating you want to give (either "right on!", "off topic", "troll" or "spam") for each comment. Then hit the "moderate" button down the bottom of the page.
