Breaking the Australian Silence - Sydney Peace Prize awarded to John Pilger

Sat, 07/11/2009 - 16:51

The Sydney Peace Prize for 2009 was awarded to Australian journalist and author John Pilger. He delivered his acceptance speech at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday 5 November. The prize citation reads: "For work as an author, film-maker and journalist as well as for courage as a foreign and war correspondent in enabling the voices of the powerless to be heard. For commitment to peace with justice by exposing and holding governments to account for human rights abuses and for fearless challenges to censorship in any form."

Sydney Peace Foundation Director Professor Stuart Rees commented, "The jury was impressed by John's courage as well as by his skills and creativity. His commitment to uncovering human rights abuses shines through his numerous books, films and articles. His work inspires all those who value peace with justice."

In a speech at the Sydney Opera House to mark his award of Australia's human rights prize, the Sydney Peace Prize, John Pilger describes the "unique features" of a political silence in Australia: how it affects the national life of his homeland and the way Australians see the world and are manipulated by great power "which speaks through an invisible government of propaganda that subdues and limits our political imagination and ensures we are always at war -- against our own first people and those seeking refuge, or in someone else's country".

This speech has also been published in full at Information Clearing House and Project Safecom

Zimbabwe: Open letter to Gwisai and the entire IS tendency- URGENT 31.10.09

Sun, 01/11/2009 - 02:05
It has come to our attention that you have laid a criminal charge against 3 fellow ISO-Zimbabwe members for allegedly forcible entry into the ISOZ office and for theft of ISOZ equipment. We call on you to immediately withdraw such charges as clearly the dispute is within the ranks of the proletariat and thus deserves proletarian methods to resolve it and not the bourgeois courts. We urge the entire IS tendency to intervene to prevent activists from being subjected to the notorious jails of the Zanu-PF-MDC regime.

Carenne Gate: NSW DET Serious Misconduct unit does not respect confidentiality

Wed, 21/10/2009 - 00:19

I have two emails from Brian Carter's FOI request, clearly showing that the NSW Department of Education and Training's Employee Performance and Conduct Unit (also known as the Serious Misconduct Unit) care nothing for the confidentiality of complainants.

In January, Mr Carter made a formal statement to EPAC, requesting that his complaint be dealt with as a protected disclosure. This was refused as he was "no longer an employee of the department." This document was then circulated to a number of people inside the department, including people to whom it related.

Wed, 21/10/2009 - 00:02

This is an email from Peter Harvey to Patrick Quinn drafting a response to an inquiry by Brian Carter. At the bottom of the letter, Mr Harvey acknowledges that he had advised Carenne Support of a lengthy complaint document, which Mr Carter had unsuccessfully tried to have dealt with as a protected disclosure.
